Five talented Mid-Carolina High School choral students proudly represented their school at the 2026 South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA) Central Region Choir, held Tuesday, October 20, at Newberry College.
Jessie Coffey, Jade Colantuono, AJ Nersinger, Jacqueline Rivera-Hernandez, and Makenzy Shealy participated in this distinguished musical experience, joining student vocalists from across the region for a day dedicated to choral excellence, collaboration, and artistic growth.
The choir was privileged to work under the direction of Dr. Will Griswold, Director of Choral Activities at Charleston Southern University, who served as the guest clinician. Throughout the day, students participated in intensive rehearsals, refining their vocal techniques, musicianship, and ensemble skills before presenting a culminating concert.
The concert program featured a diverse selection of choral literature, including Jester Hairston's Elijah Rock, Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria, Joan Szymko's It Takes a Village, Nine Hundred Miles arranged by Philip Silvey, and Z. Randall Stroope's The Pasture.
Participating schools included Mid-Carolina, ALA Blythewood, Ben Lippen, Chapin, Crestwood, Dutch Fork, Emerald, Gilbert, Greenwood, Lakewood, Laurens District 55, Lexington, Pelion, River Bluff, Strom Thurmond, Sumter, Swansea, Waccamaw, and White Knoll High Schools
The SCMEA Central Region Choir provides students with valuable opportunities to experience challenging choral repertoire, learn from distinguished music educators, and collaborate with fellow musicians who share their passion for singing.
Mid-Carolina High School congratulates Jessie, Jade, AJ, Jacqueline, and Makenzy on this outstanding accomplishment. Their commitment to musical excellence, preparation, and positive representation of their school reflects the dedication and talent of the Mid-Carolina High School Choral Program.
We are proud of our Rebels as they continue Building a Community of Excellence through music!
